Descriptif :
The main field of work for the EASTCO team is Polynesian cultures and societies. It includes four lines of research. First of all ¿cultural foundations,¿ comprised of specialists in linguistics, ethnology and Polynesian civilizations; their joint objective is to understand the historical development of these societies, from a diachronic perspective, through the study of myths and ancient religions. Then ¿encounters¿ incorporating work concerning first contacts with the West, from the end of the 18th century to the 19th, in diverse forms with christianization and colonization. The 20th century is marked by the questioning of the new political order (and sometimes the religious order). This approach opens historical perspectives but also forms a platform for research and specifically conversations between historians, anthropologists and others. Then the ¿writings¿ area covers western and Oceanic literature and the different English, Spanish, French and German literary expressions about Oceania. Indigenous oral literature occurred before writing emerged, offering rich perspectives, as well as the study of the link between oral and written expression. Lastly, the ¿transmissions¿ line addresses educational and cultural matters in a contemporary Oceanic context, a context marked by developments (ethical, scientific, political) in the teaching of indigenous languages and cultures, and the specifics of teaching in a non-western environment. Professional researchers and students work notably on the teaching of French, English and Polynesian languages as well as language contacts.
